Most blog posts are in Asian languages

July 18, 2006

37% of all blogs are in Japanese, only 31% in English and 15% in Chinese, according to Technorati (March 06). This means that at least 52% are in Asian languages, and presumably China is still growing at a rapid pace. It seems incredible that here in Asia many marketers still perceive blogging as a ‘western’ concept yet to impact the region.

This insight is just one of the highlights for me in Ross Dawson’s excellent 15-page PDF publication, just released, and free for all to download, The Future of Media Report. Future of Media Report

The report is published as a thought-starter in advance of the Future of Media event taking place next week in San Francisco and Sidney. Apart appreciating the great, clean charts, I also learned:

  • Eighteen percent of Americans over 65 years old have created content on the Internet, showing it’s not just for teenagers

  • The US is heavily overrepresented in the global media markets, boasting 42% of all revenue. However China’s media appetite is exploding.

  • Other countries are catching up to the US in online advertising, though classifieds is a particularly strong source of revenue growth in the US.

  • Teens spend more total time with media than adults, but less time watching TV

Enjoy, and thanks Ross!

Global discussion on the future of media…

The Future of Media Report 2006 has certainly achieved its intention of generating discussion with dozens of posts and also good media coverage. So far there has been discussion in five languages from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Croatia…
