Pecha Kucha creative virus arrives in Bangkok

Another example of old formats of expression giving way to new, more open formats, allowing more control for people to express their creativity in Asia. And a great sponsorship opportunity for brand that want to celebrate creativity.

Here’s an introduction to Pecha Kucha from Wikipedia:

  • Started in Tokyo by two architects
  • Presenters show 20 powerpoint images, each for 20 seconds
  • Usually has 14 presenters, mostly from the design, creative, and arts field
  • Replicated in more than 11 cities, including London, San Francisco, Shanghai
  • Well-known presenters include Jun Aoki, Rem Koolhaas, and Tom Dixon
  • No restrictions from the type of content presented

Some trends that events like Pecha Kucha may be tapping into include ‘Japan Leading…Instant Gratification… Rise of Design… Mashing… Art Collectives’.

Checking out Bangkok’s first Pecha Kucha night, I found that presentations ranged from ‘alphabet clouds’ to packaging design for music for farm animals to award-winning architectural projects in New York. My favorite is the ‘live animation’ project where a love story was told through pencil-based graphics created live on the spot as the story progressed, with music supported by a live band. Amazing. The ambience was kept very local, personal, low-key, and laid-back, helped by the free beers handed out at the Asahi booth… yes, freeee.

It seems the top-down communication structure is fast crumbling as young people re-arrange their social network and collaborate, mashing up all fields of creativity in a fluid manner, and this trend is infiltrating Asia. For more examples along similar lines, check out BarCamp and MashPit.
