Where’s the ‘social’ part of the iPhone?

Peck (MindShare, Thailand) writes:

I came across a really nice iPhone review from Peter S Magnusson’s blog. He’s emphasized on the important of social networking and point out that Apple fails to intregrate social networking in the iPhone. Magnusson writes:

(Steve) Jobs does not understand the 21st century computer usage paradigm…..Today, people chat; they blog; they share multimedia like pictures, video, and audio; they flame each other on forums; they link with each other in intricate webs; they swap effortlessly between different electronic personae and avatars; they listen to internet radio; they vote on this that and the other; they argue on wiki discussion groups…..Jobs can’t quite get rid of the notion that a mobile device is nothing but a really small personal computer.

    Mr Magnusson seems to be looking for a $2000 phone that might appeal to a wealthy time-rich minority in the most mature markets and a tiny elite elsewhere.
    In Thailand we have no YouTube (still), no decent digital mapping and the world seems to revolve around e-mail, SMS and instant messaging.
    For me, truly global networking is more likely to be driven by improving distribution of the most common technologies: broadband faster than current US or Thai connections, affordable laptops for all (project cancelled in Thailand), an end to some markets’ exorbitant wi-fi charges and an understanding that outside of the US, SMS is used for more than voting on American Idol.
    Until now we have all assumed that technology will develop along the same trajectory in all markets, with the only variables being the ability to pay and the speed of adoption. Perhaps we are beginning to see a less linear pattern emerging.
    In the old world there are profound differences between cultures in the way people interact and consume media. Why should this not be true of the digital world? So perhaps the iPhone 2017 model will have radically different versions in each market.

    PS on second thoughts, he may have a point after all. I tried to send this reply via BlackBerry but it was not in the mood. In the end I had to e-mail myself and then get back to a laptop to re-send.
